Jeremiah 25:10 – I will banish from them the songs of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, the sound of millstones and the light of the lamb.

It’s weird – I’ve always felt that the millstone was a bad thing, that famous saying “a millstone around my neck.” It always gave me a sense of foreboding because who wants a heavyweight around their neck?

But what is a millstone?

Either of two circular stones used for grinding something, mainly grain. Which actually means that the sound of a millstone is a good thing. It means that there is abundance. That the famine has ended. There is dancing, rejoicing and food. He has restored what was lost. So the sound of a millstone is the cause of a good thing. When those are banished, it means famine, death, curses upon the land. It’s funny though that when restored, the Bible doesn’t mention millstones.

Jeremiah 33:11 – The sounds of joy and happiness and the sounds of brides and grooms. You will hear those who bring thanks offerings to the Lord’s temple say, “Give thanks to the Lord of Armies because the Lord is good, because his mercy endures forever. I will restore the fortunes of the land to what they were before”, says the Lord.

But it does speak about marriages when the curse is broken and restoration of the land. Maybe millstones aren’t mentioned in the after because the possibilities of “after” are so much greater. Not limited to the grinding of grain, but can do anything. At least that is my interpretation.
