The truth is, many times my heart gets heavy when I think about the youths in our church. Or rather the lack of youths. They are slowly fading away and I don’t even know what to do anymore. Yahweh, draw them close to you. Keep them in your care.
The Colours of the Rainbow
CONFESSION: I never remember the colours of the rainbow. One of the youths who is working on an art project said that the paint she would need are the colours of the rainbow. Which had me thinking of the significance of the colours. I know that nothing is a coincidence with you, so the colours aren’t a coincidence either.
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.
RED: in the Bible represents sin and sinfulness.
Isaiah 1:18 – “Come on now, let’s discuss this!” says the Lord. “Though your sins are bright red, they will become as white as snow. Though they are dark red, they will become as white as wool.
It is monumentally interesting that the rainbow which is a symbol of Yahweh’s covenant that he would not destroy the earth by water again starts with red. Which represents sin.
ORANGE: is not mentioned in the Bible at all. Why? It’s a “new” word and wasn’t around when the Bible was written. But there are items/images in scripture that have what we call orange as their colour.
Fire (red, orange, yellow and sometimes blue)
Pottery: orange brown.
Huh. And fire is used to bake the pottery.
Shaping, moulding, purifying.
Fire:
Leviticus 6:13 – The fire must always be burning on the altar. It must never go out.
Pottery
Jeremiah 18:4 – Whenever a clay pot he was working on was ruined, he would rework it into a new clay pot the way he wanted to make it.
Washing away, being made new.
YELLOW: usually represented as gold in scripture. Valuable. When purified, we shall come out as good. Gold/yellow was used a lot to cover items in the temple.
Zechariah 13:9 – I will bring this third of the people through the fire. I will refine them as silver is refined. I will test them as gold is tested. They will call on me, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people.’ They will reply, ‘The Lord is our God.’ ”
GREEN: new growth, fresh, flourishing.
Psalm 23:2 – He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside peaceful waters.
BLUE: was featured heavily in the temple and the clothes of the priest. In service to Yahweh.
Exodus 39:1 (NIV)- From the blue, purple and scarlet yarn they made woven garments for ministering in the sanctuary. They also made sacred garments for Aaron, as the Lord commanded Moses.
INDIGO: I don’t know if this is actually found in the Bible. But it’s a colour that mixes blue and purple.
PURPLE: Also used heavily in the temple and clothing of the rest. Rare colour that Lydia specialised in, because of its rarity and the cost to produce, only the wealthy could truly afford it. Colour of choice for those of noble or royal birth. Also a colour of service.
Proverbs 31:22 – She makes quilts for herself. Her clothes are made of linen and purple cloth.
Ezekiel 27:7 – Your sails were made out of fine embroidered linen from Egypt. They were like your flags. Your awnings were violet and purple. They came from the coasts of Elishah.
Now I was truly hoping the colours of the rainbow would take me somewhere. I believe it has: from sin to royalty. But I had to go through the fire and come out as pure gold. I had to be reborn and produce new growth. Then being in service to the King and becoming a joint heir with his Son. And this is just the surface.
